MAC OSX - setting a boot partition

Setting Your Partition "Active" Using Fdisk

Words in bold below are things you must type (followed by Enter).

1. Boot your Mac OS X install dvd
2. Once the installer is running, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal
3. Determine which disk your MacOSX partition is on

Type diskutil list
Verify which disk number holds your partition (disk0, disk1, etc.)

4. Start using Fdisk

Assuming the MacOSX disk is the first disk ("disk0"), then
type fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 <== use "rdisk" with your disk number here !!

Ignore the error "fdisk: could not open MBR file ..."

5. Determine which partition for MacOSX needs to be set "Active"

Type p
Verify which partition is for MacOSX (1, 2, 3, etc.)

6. Set the partition "Active"

Assuming it is partition 1, then
type f 1 <== use your partition number here !!

7. Save and exit

Type write
Type y (yes you are sure)
Type exit (to quit)

8. Remove the install DVD and reboot

Follow the following steps to get your gear in motion.

A. CREATE NEW VIRTUAL MACHINE ( FreeBSD based)

1. On Vmware, click File –> New –> New Virtual Machine
2. Choose Customize –> Hardware Compatibility: Choose Workstation 6.5
3. Installer disc: Browse to your iATKOS v7 .iso file or iDeneb 10.5 iso file
4. Guest OS : Others –> FreeBSD (Since MacOSX is based on Free BSD)
5. Name + CPU ( 1 or 2 processors both work) + RAM + HDD just use recommended settings.

B. CONFIGURATION

6. After create new virtual machines, start machines
7. Press F8 to start booth with options
8. Enter these options:
-v -f busratio=20 cpus=1 busratiopath=7
9. There you go ! Wait for the booting screen finish and you should pop into the installation process of Mac OSX.

OSX86 is a collaborative hacking project to run the Mac OS X computer operating
system on non-Apple personal computers with x86 architecture processors.
This upload includes compressed iATKOS v7 DVD iso image and md5 rtf files.

Attention!

* This DVD is designed for Non-Apple x86 computers (PC).
So, do not try to boot it on Apple Hardware!
* This DVD includes Apple's Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 (9J61) installation
for Intel and AMD CPUs, some basic drivers and x86 patches.
* Make sure that the md5 checksum of your iATKOS iso image matches the one in md5.rtf file.
Do this MD5 check just before mounting or doing anything with the iso image!

Well, there I was...backing into a parking space against a curb and I was in a hurry and I heard it...SCRAPE! One fraction of a second...barely moving. Got out and looked at the rim...OOOOOOWWWWW!

As you can see, this is minor wheel damage with very little paint and metal repair required. It could be touched up with a paint touch up stick, but it would not look right

Well, no need to fear. I've done this enough times to have an easy way to do home repairs with a few simple items. Note that this procedure only covers light scuffs. This isn't meant to be used to repair a damaged wheel or one where the scuffs cause significant damage to the rim. This is only for those annoying superficial scuffs, which seem to happened to me more times than I care to admit.

There are plenty of good services which can do this for very reasonable money. Many of you will happily use a service, but I'm inpatient and have the free time (generally) to spend a couple of hours on a repair. Plus, it really takes the edge off "donking" my wheels when I know I can simply fix it myself.

So if you are interested...here's what you need:

Masking tape & masking paper

PLEASE NOTE: Although this is a Porsche wheel, the Wurth Silver Wheel Paint is a perfect match for Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and some VW wheels. It can also be used to completely refinish any wheel. The following technique, explained in nice detail by "NASAraser of AudiWorld.com", is a good way to do a small area repair if you curb your wheel or otherwise damage a small area.

Step 1. Clean... Clean... Clean...and did I mention CLEAN!

This is one of the most important steps. Use paint thinner to THOROUGHLY clean the ENTIRE area around the damage...you need to get ANY wax or polish or anything off the wheel...I'm going to remind you EVERY step...I probably end up wiping down these surfaces 10 or more times before painting...if you don't do this, the rest is pointless. Also, we want to work ONLY on the area that's damaged...don't go nuts and try to paint half your wheel on the car...for this technique to succeed we want to sand and paint the area only IMMEDIATELY around the damage.

Use a lint-free cloth for cleaning your wheel. Prior to cleaning with paint thinner (Prepsol is even better), scrub the tire and wheel with dish detergent (Dawn) to remove as much silicone (tire protectant) as possible. Dry thoroughly.

2. Sand and Putty

like to START by masking the tire from the wheel...get the masking tape WELL behind the rim.

Next, sand the area to a nice "feather" with 240 grit sandpaper and wipe some spot putty on. IMPORTANT...this ENTIRE project will work best if the wheel is in the sun and its a nice warm day...the drying time of spot putty is minutes but if it's cold or damp, this project is likely to not work out too well. Remember...keep your sanding to the IMMEDIATE area around the damage. Trust me on this.

So once you've done the first round of putty, switch to the finer of your sandpaper (400 grit in my case) and sand and putty until it FEELS and LOOKS flush. Note that I use the paper wrapped around a piece of wood or rubber eraser to make a flat sanding block. It's best to sand with a flat block to get the smoothest finish.

Note that up to this point...including waiting 5 to 10 minutes between coats of putty that the whole project has taken about 40 minutes.

3. Mask and Primer

Okay, here's where a bit of laziness is going to create an entirely new project. The silver metallic paint will get everywhere. I'm talking permanently attached to the fender on the opposite corner of the car. Mask carefully and cover the entire car with an old sheet or equivalent.

I've used the scratch-filler primer and sanded it and put a bit more putty on. Note that this is the first place where I use my special technique. Immediately after I spray the primer (or paint) I clean all of the overspray off the spokes of the wheel (clean rag and paint thinner) and the area around the inside of the rim. I do not want to try to get the paint to smoothly adhere to the entire wheel! We only want to paint the REPAIR. Only the clear coat will be sprayed without wiping off the overspray. Wait for the primer to fully dry and lightly sand it with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper.

5. Painting

VITAL: Read the instructions on the can! If you try to use this paint in cold temperatures (or in damp conditions) it's going to be a mess. Shake the can for at least a full minute and push the spray nozzle as you sweep across and release at the end. Spray on, spray off. Spray on, spray off. Apply as a very fine coat. You're not trying to make it glossy. That's the job of the top clearcoat.

This is roughly the distance I used the can from the wheel. I highly recommend practicing on a scrap part to get used to the distances and thickness this paint sprays.

Now we should be nearly done but (as always), Pete got inpatient and sprayed the clear way too soon. As a result, the clearcoat lifted the silver paint and messed up my job.

Here's the paint lifting due to the clearcoat being applied too soon. Be sure to give plenty of drying time.

This is no biggie. Take a deep breath, get out your rag and the paint thinner and take it all off. The thinner I used did not eat into the primer so I simply cleaned the wheel (again) and re-sprayed the silver paint.

Okay, fast forward a few minutes... I had to roll the car forward a bit to keep it in the sun and I had cleaned (and let fully dry) the wheel and RE-sprayed the silver. Now I'm carefully removing the silver overspray.

After the silver colorcoat dries (overnight is best), you can apply two thin coats of clear with about 20-30 minutes of drying time between coats. After the clear dries (another day) you can use 1500-2000 grit wet and dry or a fine cut compound to feather in any traces of the repair. Use a final polish to restore full gloss.

Here's the nicely repaired and painted wheel!

With thanks to a friend of mine I'd like to give users of Windows Vista and Windows7 a nice little tip. If you are an IT professional or a power user, one of the bug bears of Microsoft forcing you to change OS every few years, is that all those useful tools and utils we take for granted keep getting moved and hidden. God Mode puts them all in one place. Enabling it is very easy.

Create a new folder on your desktop
Rename it to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

This will change it to an icon that can be double clicked and which provides access to everything the ubergeek amongst you will need.

* Don't forget to Activate Windows after install, this is not automated to make it safe for Legit Ultimate keys and or new/improved cracks in the future.

* To use the Hazar crack simply run \Cracks\1Crack.exe or pick it from settings or autostart menu. pick the OEM or hardware picture, then press the bottom middle button (install/Remove bootloader) - make sure you apply settings and ssWPI is complete first because the crack reboots by itself.

* If Move Documents doesn't work after applying post install run settings again and apply again to make it function (caused by security issues).

Picking 7zip x64 on a x32 install will pause ssWPI with a 7zip error screen - this is normal and your best to skip all x64 options in a 32bit OS.

Not all apps and games will function properly on Windows 7, by right clicking a shortcut or an exe file you can set compatability to Windows XP SP3 and set it to run as Administrator, this fixes many of the early problems I had with apps not working with x64, so give that a try if you have problems with some of your apps.

Washing and Waxing your car

well as ive read so far it can be as indepth a process as you want it to be... and as expensive as your willing to imagine.

Basic Products used are Meguiars found at www.meguiars.com.au
Products to look for would be NXT 2.0 wax and the Gold Class Carnuba.

first off, the end result of waxing is ALL about the prep. this includes the wash, dry, and claybarring (which is a very very good thing to do, just this alone will make your paint look and feel a whole lot better, it creates a non-contaminated finish to apply your wax to.)

first things first, best way to keep your car looking clean is to prevent micromarring/swirlmarks... these arent as apparent on lighter colored cars, sometimes completely hidden by silver, but micromarring will gradually cause the finish to dull.
put simply, the best way to prevent micromarring is by washing and drying carefully and with the right tools, (aka, use a quality wash mitt, turn it often, go in straight lines when lathering up the car,[you dont want to rub that dirt and dust all over the paint] always rinse it in a bucket of clean water seperate from your soapy water to keep the dirt from getting back on your cars surface and being rubbed in..)

i would strongly recommend drying with a high quality waffle weave microfiber towel... i wouldnt pick one up at a car parts store unless you have to, as their microfiber isnt exaclty the best, there are several websites however that offer MF towels at good prices.. pakshak.com autopia car car and some other. even using a cotton towel can cause horrible micromarring that will be very apparent on black cars. neevverr use beach towels!!! old laundry does not make good drying cloth! use MF if possible, or at the very least, 1000% cotton.

ok, now, to clarify something, POLISHES are not wax, not do you apply it over the top of a wax. Polish is like very fine grit liquid sandpaper. you usually apply this by machine (like the porter cable 7424 buffer for like 80$ at homedepot) or sometime by hand. what it does is when you rub in the polish, it gradually sands a super thin layer of your clear coat off causing the top of the paint and the bottom of light scratches and swirls to get levelled out. you usually start off with a medium cut polish for minor swirlmarks and then finish with a fine cut polish/glaze.. just like if you were sanding anything else, you start roughest and finish finest. but always start with the least roughest possible and decide from there whether or not you need to get more aggressive.

once you have polished the paint and levelled all scratches and swirls, (note: if you can feel a scrraatch with your fingernail, polishing will NOT remove it. this is for the swirly, holographic sometimes, spider web looking scratches in your paint that you usually see in the sun) you can apply a wax. the paint will be very clean and smooth and waxing is absolutely a must to protect your new finish from the elements.

heres where this thread comes into play... it all depends on what you want with your wax.. from what i have heard and tried, the best thing to do is to start off waxing the car with a wax known for its longevity... this would be something like Zaino or maybe NXT if u cant get zaino or klasse. these waxes are very durable and last a long time but mostly lack the depth and wetness of carnuba waxes (aka mothers and meguires solid waxes that come in the tubs) its best to wax the whole car per the instructions with at least 1 coat of the durable synthetic wax, then after it has cured (day in between coats and 2-3 coats is best i think, anything more doesnt seem to help.) after your synthetic has cured, you can follow up with just about any carnuba wax to get that depth that the synthetics just seem to be missing. carnubas dont last very long at all however.. I personally can tell about after a week that my carnuba has evaporated off. i usually wash each weekend and apply carnuba again, then every 6 months to a year i will strip off all wax (even the durable stuff) and start over.

a good combo might be NXT topped with meguires gold class. I would suggest not using liquid waxes whenever possible, because they are liquid at room temp makes me assume that they will evaporate rather easily and they never seem to last quite as long as the solids. paste wax is alright but i think the tubs with solid wax always fare the best.

Download Media Player Classic Home Cinema (GPU accelerated) - click here.
Download and install the latest Direct X - click here
Make sure your graphics card drivers are up-to date.

Start Media Player Classic,

First go to OPTIONS, and in the first field labeled PLAYER you might want to check 'launch files in Full screen'.

Then go to the field Playback > OUTPUT. Here we need to our Direct Show preference, and this is the most important task for you to setup.

Windows XP users, select Overlay Mixer, VMR7, VMR9 or VMR9 renderless
Windows Vista users, select EVR or EVR custom renderer

We have Windows Vista 32-bit installed, we select EVR Custom Preset, highlighted in bold that really should be your preference. Feel free to fool around with some of the other settings.

Small note, after each Direct Show change is is wise to select apply and then exit the program. Then startup again, that way for sure the new setting will be activated.

Sound - Go to Internal Filters. This can be a bit of a culprit. If you playback audio through the PC soundcard (multichannel) analog over speakers, you might just want to leave things as they are. I however use a SPDIF coaxal pass-through, the automatically selected embedded audio filters for DTS and AC3 where not properly in sync. I disabled them and just used a free to download software AC3 filter.

Your choice of course. Don't be afraid to play around with it. If it works fine, don't fool around with these settings.

Next to the DTS and AC3 settings I've highlighted Matroska. Matroska is the MKV / x.264 file container format we want to have accelerated. We strongly recommend you to check the Matroska flag, so that the internal filter will be used, key to x.264 GPU acceleration.

After a restart you should be all go with 1080p video running from your GPU.

Go to Play > Shader > Combine.

I advise you to select and combine the following shaders:

Sharpen Complex or Edgde sharpen
16-235 -> 1-255 (will give you a nice dark screen)
optionally de-interlace: but most movies are de-interlaced already

Now, enable your shaders to tweak your image further.

During playback you can press CTRL+P to enable and disable the pixel shaders.

Which output filter are you using in media player classic? View -> Options -> Playback -> Output. Try Overlay Mixer. The the graphics card setup applet make sure Video Acceleration is set to full (max) and Write Combining is enabled. From the Display Properties dialog select the Settings Tab, Advanced button, then the Troubleshot tab. You'll have to reboot after changing these.

I just bought myself a HTC Touch Pro 2 and have found that the GPS cannot and will not get a steady and accurate current location, it scanned continuously trying to get a lock.

After a quick search online I found a fix.

OPTION ONE

you will need to install a few things to put the changes in.

Resetting WINDOWS XP user account passwords

Below is the step by step process to gaining access to any windows XP account via a well known security hole in the installation proces

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it's assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be "Press any key to boot from cd"

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like "If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it"

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating "Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds"

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of "pressing any key" to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you've made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

VW Bora Front DISCS Rotors and Brake PADS

Ive spent a lot of time on my car as described here.

and recently the brakes have been calling out for attention.
Ive had a warning light and warning chime blinking and sounding off every time I turn the car on or whenever I take my foot of the brakes as I'm driving. MAN, is the warning annoying.

So, Its time to replaced the brake pads.

Its actually not very hard at all to replace the pads and once your replacing the pads you'll realise its even easier to replace the rotors, actually, its only one small screw that holds the rotor in place. Amazing really.

Instead of buying rotors and pads from Volkswagen spare parts centre I purchased my pads online from www.autohausaz.com in Arizona USA and my rotors came from Weldon brake and clutch in Sydney.

Its all very easy and you might have all the tools necessary already in a your general tool box,

although the rear brake caliper piston cold be hard to retract without the right tools.

Some ingenuity and it can be done but be careful you don't want to brake off the fluid line.

The brake caliper piston gets ratcheted on one click at a time every time you pull on the hand brake, its fail safe mechanism to make sure the hand brake is consistently taught and firm.

Without the correct tool to push the piston back in, id recommend getting a friend to help you turn and push at the same time.

Road Bike Fitting - Take that leap of faith and do it yourself

Im due for a new bike soon and have been looking at the basics of frame fitting. Here is what I found.
As a road rider who rides a little more than your average commuting cyclist Ive been told by many to go to my local bike shop for a fitting and get it done 'properly'. That's all good and well but my last visit to a bike store had me feeling a little jaded by the lack of knowledge on bikes and bike geometry. Fitting a bike properly goes a little deeper than finding the right height bike and raising the handle bars till your back stops hurting. Which is the method this one particular bike store uses to sell $10000 bikes. I wont name names here.

Which leaves me with the very good point, If you want a proper fit I recommed you seek out someone who can give you a very good fit and who can then recommend some brands and models in particular sizes for you to go and try.

Ok considering that I can have a bike delivered to my door for far cheaper than any local bike shop can ever offer. I wondered what exactly is wrong with me learning how to fit a bike and then possibly building everything myself.

Theres a cycling forum called bikeforums.net which is rather good, there a few nice people there and its possible to buy a fully built bike or maybe just a nicely priced frameset.

Choosing a Bike

ok where to start?? Well you should already , hopefully, have a general idea of what type of rider you are how flexible you what type of distance you are going to be covering whilst riding this bike. I say this bike because I would have a different type of bike for commuting then say for racing then i would for touring. For commuting Id want an upright position on the bike with a strong and steardy frame fork and wheel set weight not really being a factor. On the other hand a Racing Bike would have you in a more aero position with much consideration on having the bike as light as possible, So weight and speed are very much the main concern.

Say for instance I want a fast road bike built for taking on century rides in comfort, i also have a week back so this needs to be take into consideration. A couple of bikes that come to mind quickly in this category are the Specialized Roubaix and the Cervelo RS. Now that I have in mind what type of riding I want to do and I have some idea of the style of bike I want, its time to go on to sizing. You have to remember here though that although most bikes are pretty they might not be the best suited bike for what your doing.

First thing to do is measure everything... in general if your going to shop for items online then you need to have every body part measured precisely. More on this later, but for now you should measure your inseam. That's basically the length of the inside of your leg from your pelvic bone to the floor (without shoes).

But generally you follow the rule : (inseam length) X .67 = frame size.
For example is my inseam was 83cm, i would multiple that by .67 to give me the frame size of 55.61cm. So when you go searching for a frame you want the seat tube to be around 55.61cm from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the top tube.

Two items which can you can sink alot of your money into are wheels and groupset.

If your a lightweight rider then most wheels are fine but considering Im a little heavy than your average rider (100kg) and I opted to get mine customer made. Benifits here being that I can build them how i like nice and strong and fast and Im not paying for things i dont need like stickers and red spokes. Admittedly the top of the range wheels for Campagnolo or Fulcrum might be faster but I would cry if i payed so much for wheels and had them buckle on me. Also the servicablity of custom wheels and the ability to replace any part any time for a small fee is very appealing.

TWE in Taren point in Sydney Australia make a great wheel and they are honest which is a bonus. Life time warrenty for a wheel that is built for you by a specialist. I have a pair and they ride beautifully.

A Couple of places to look for custom wheel are :

Groupset

Picking a groupset can be expensive but for most people who dont race anything above a Shimano 105 Campagnolo Veloce is fine. The great thing about buying a from this level and up is that if anything breaks or wears out you can then upgrade with a higher level component.

I opted for Campagnolo Chorus groupset I cant justify the extra for record or super record and if I need to later I upgrade individual components as needed.

With this groupset you also get the cranks and my sizing would indicate I get the 172.5 size cranks.

When your considering your Groupset take note of the different gearing sizes and options,
different riding styles would lead you to choose a different configuration.

Standard, Compact and triple. The latter two giving you more options when riding hills and slightly more technical courses. With the standard your pushing a bigger chain ring up front which is great when you want to carrying some serious speed. Most people nowadays would generally go for the Compact option with middle of the road rear cluster, 12-25 perhaps.

Seat and Handle Bars

These items are the most personal part of the whole bike setup.
choosing a seat can be a trial of patience no matter where you buy it from.
Some stores may offer a trial of some sort depending on how much they like you, but in general you wont know what feels good till you've tried a couple.

There are online stores that have reasonable offers, i would search all over the net first though, good deals can be had in the most unlikely places.

Your handlebars should be wider for comfort and narrower for speed and aero efficiency.
Id go by the rule of having the bars as wide as your shoulders are, keeping in mind that some brands measure their bars differently. A 46cm in one brand could be a 44cm in another.

Stem and handle bar height

If youve managed to source the correct sized frame, the next step is to get your handle bars in position. This includes cutting your fork and getting the correct sized stem.

No two people are the same even if they are the same height with the same inseam measurements. Theres no reason why you cant try a few different stem sizes as for the height of the handlebars Id place the stem on the fork at a comfortable position ride with it around making sure the reach and height are comfortable. Then and only then, when you have your ideal riding setup would you cut your fork. Theres no problem with riding with an uncut fork for a while so you can be sure. Just remember that once you cut your fork you cant uncut it, this could mean that your going to have to buy a new fork.

Cheapy Second hand stems are a good idea even if there a bit scratched or beaten up, then once you know what you need you can go buy that super carbon replacement. A good idea here is to buy your stem from a local bike shop with the agreement that you can return it if its the wrong size. Remember that theres nothing wrong with flipping the stem upside down to give you more options.

Obviously with all the bits and pieces that youve collected and purchased online you are pretty ready to build your bike. Id recommend a basic bicycle mechanics tool kit with lock ring removal tool, bottum bracket remover tool etc.

I heard of this through a friend and finally got around to using it yesterday for the first time to buy myself a jacket. Usually you would plan you would just bid randomly hoping not to get out bid but with auction sniper all the guess work is removed. CHATTER'S BIDDING PRIMER

A snipe is a last minute bid, generally placed in the last minute or, most commonly, in the closing seconds of an auction. This can be done manually, with you sitting in front of your computer, bidding at the last second, or it can be done via software, such as Auction Sniper. The point is to get a high bid in, giving others little time to respond with a counterbid.

If someone else makes a higher bid earlier in the auction, that person will win, because he bid the highest. That is how auctions work. The point here is that you have no way of knowing what his high bid (proxy bid) really is; you only know that he bid at least enough to be on top. For example, if bidder A bids $42 and bidder B bids $75, while the auction is still going on, you will see bidder B listed as the high bidder at $43, which is one bid increment over the next-highest bid of $42. You know that B bid more than A, but you do not know how much. If the auction ends like that, B will win for the same $43 price and you will never know what his max really was.

Let us say that bidder C comes along and bids $61. Bidder B will still win, but he will be listed as winning for $62, since much more of his proxy bid was used up to keep him as top bidder, by placing him one increment (in this case, a dollar) above the second-highest bidder, C.

Why snipe? Because many people do not bid their max. Trying to get a good price, they tend to bid just enough to become or stay the high bidder. They do not bid what they are REALLY willing to pay until someone else comes along and outbids them; only then will they bid higher. Sometimes this cycle goes back and forth, with two or more bidders (called "nibblers") continually outbidding each other, in an expensive game of one up-manship. But these same nibblers tend to leave their bids alone if no one else outbids them.

That is where snipers come in. Bidder X may have bid $25 on an item, but will go higher if someone outbids him. He may go up to $100 if he feels he has to, in order to win, but leaves his bid at $25, thinking he is somehow getting a better deal. He overlooks the fact that if he bids the $100, he will not pay that amount, unless other bidders push the auction price up that high. So along comes bidder Y, a sniper, who bids $50 in the last seconds and wins for $26! There is no time for bidder X to come back and raise his bid. He is upset, because he knows that he would have been willing to go higher. Additionally, he does not know that bidder Y's max was $50--all he sees is that he lost the auction for one dollar. You see, there is a strong emotional component to bidding, and we snipers try to avoid that as much as possible, because it is not a positive aspect of the bidding process. It is the emotional component that causes people to bid much higher than they had planned.

Does sniping work every time? No. There is no magical was to guarantee a win. But eBay is replete with bidders who nibble and do not observe or analyze their own bidding behaviors, and that is why we snipers tend to win. Heck, many of these bidders do not even HAVE a maximum amount in mind, which is why they continue to bid and rebid; they get caught up in the drama and excitement of the auction as it progresses. Many of these are new eBayers, though you would be shocked at how many veterans act the same way. Consequently, we have a very high success rate--mine approaches 98%, with all of my losses going to higher bidders who were willing to pay more than I was.

The key is to decide the ABSOLUTE max you will pay, set your snipe through AS, and leave it at that. They will take care of the rest. Do not obsess about getting the very last bid in--at three seconds, instead of eight--just decide what the "I will pay this and not a penny more" amount is and stay with it. It is more important that your bid get in at the end, than it is to risk your bid not reaching eBay in time by trying to do one, two or three-second snipes. (If someone else bids that late in the auction--less than fifteen seconds remaining--he is another sniper and was probably going to bid at that point, regardless of whether or not you had bid, so do not get unnerved by that.) This is why it is important to bid your absolute maximum. Most of the time you will find that your max does not get reached and you will get your win at a good price. When you do lose, it will not be because you did not bid your max; you will simply have been outbid—whether by another sniper or by someone who bid much earlier in the auction—but you will know that someone else was willing to pay more.

Most of us tend to use a 5-10 lead time; some members add a few seconds on Sunday evenings (eBay's busiest time) and on any day when an auction ends exactly on a quarter hour (X:00, X:15, X:30, X:45), as these are also very busy times, due to sellers' incentive listings. We also bid unusual amounts, such as $25.83 instead of $25.00 even, as occasionally we end up winning auctions where others bid even dollar amounts or just one cent over the dollar, which is also a fairly common occurrence.

Helium Music Manager - Manage your MASSIVE music collection

Im not sure if Ive noted this before... ( I need to fix the search feature on this site.

Helium Music Manager is a Serious Music Management application which can take control of large amounts of music. Ive been using it for about 12 months now and Its fantastic for browsing through your music collection.

Admittedly its not the best tool to use to organise your music, there are other apps to try if your looking for an application to get your song artist titles and ID3 tags but if your looking for an app that can give you a choice of ways to get into and browse your music library no matter the size then this is it.

I have an MP3 collection ranging somewhere just over 25 000 thousand songs and with this number Helium Music Manager advises to install an SQL database then direct music manager to utilize this database.

Helium Music Manager really comes into its own when you have a large database that crosses multiple media types. MP3, Tape, CD, Vynil Etc. you can track all these different formats in your collection as if they were all part of the same library. This is really something when you have other people searching through your library for something particular.

Note : Having a very clean, properly labeled library is the key and as we all know painstaking.

Ableton Live - Live music toolset

Ableton live is a tool that Ive played and toyed around with for a while. I found out about it more towards the end of my DJing stint. I wish Id started off with it...
Its a tool that will let you compose and rewrite your tracks live in real time.
If your a writer, composer, a DJ and you wish to sample during a live set or presentation then this is undeniably supreme. Geared more towards live sets with the emphasis on your sets being LIVE, this will allow you to control the way you present and compose your music/samples/beats on a live stage with minimal fuss. Id recommend a look at the very least. With people like Chemical brothers backing this application who could question its ability.

VW Jetta MKIV "Bora" repairs and sourcing parts

Of the past few months Ive been looking into repairing the trusty runabout i own, a Volkswagen Jetta MKIV "Bora" 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine.

Why ? well below is a list of problem that we were having with the car.

Ticking - Lifters were ticking rather aggressively. It started a year ago but wife continued to drive it and didn't really bother letting me have the car for long enough to have a good look into it.
Shocks - They have been getting worn over time but in the last year these worn shocks started to leak and when we went to re-register the car it failed due to the leaking.
Brakes - pads are OK... but the discs are now due for replacement.
Major Service - considering the car has never had a proper VW service and considering we are now sitting on 105000km, i think its due for a Major service with the lot. Which I thought should include : Timing belt and tensioner, accessory belt, fuel filter, oil and oil filter, air filter, thermostat, new coolant and water pump.

Either way if your going to undertake a job such as this without any previous knowledge of mechanics I recommend you study what it is that your actually doing and why you are replacing / repairing / cleaning that part. Some are obvious such as timing belt needs to be done at a certain time but some things arnt.Otherwise its going to be an expensive exercise.

Saying that you will need to get yourself the VW MKIV Bible, the Bentleys Volkswagen Jetta / Golf MKIV Service Repair manual.
This is the download i collected from the net somewhere, its close to 200mb of PDF and it will be you one true source of information. Download all three parts uncompress and be prepared for bolt by bolt detailed instructions.

OK, so you've made it this far you should have the knowledge, now you need the parts.

When I first started asking around about what it might cost in repairs and labor, especially parts, i was a bit shocked at prices quoted. So with that in mind i started to look into alternatives.Even if I didn't want to do the work myself i was sure i could find parts cheaper. They agreed to resolve the issue quickly by re posting the missing items. No questions asked. I will definitely be going back to them when ordering parts.

After we have a good knowledge of what we need to do with manuals and instructions on how to complete the task at hand, then also collecting the parts.

Next step is to make sure you have all the necessary tools to get the job done.
I recommend buying some quality tools. I know it might sound expensive to pay extra but if your going to start out doing repairs like this then you should considering having tools that are fit for the job. Simply put tools that wont fail on you after a single use. I know people have different ideas on quality.. I mean Id love to have the 8000 piece Snap-on tool kit but realistically you can get away with buying specific tools for the what your doing and build your tool kit piece buy piece over time. Just make sure they are made of quality material and they have a reasonable warranty.

Some VW specific tools that I ran into that you might want to consider are

Timing belt tensioner wrench - I got away with using carefully using the vice grips but id reconsider this next time I took on this task.
Strut mount wrench - I purchased a 21 mm spark plug socket with a square outside edge so I could grip it with a wrench. The spark plug socket is a through socket with will allow you to feed a allen key through the middle as you would need here.
Strut brace spreader - This is a TOUGH job. Id recommend you find a tried and trued spreading tool/technique. Ive seen and heard of wacky wild ways to part these jaws of death. One way is to get an Allen key and file two sides of it down to create an EYE shape. Either way good luck.

After doing the Suspension a few times I am confident in being able to carry out this task pretty quickly, like maybe 1 hour to replace the lot BUT it took a lot of hard work and skinned knuckles before I got to this stage. I guess its all about technique and tools. Don't take on this task halfheartedly.

ANOTHER thing you may consider is air tools if you have them anywhere near your disposal. GET THEM.

My plan was to remove the valve cover replace the lifters at the same time replacing the timing belt, accessory belt, water pump and thermostat. Everything comes apart pretty easily, if you follow the DIY and the Bentleys book. You shouldn't have any problems pulling the engine bay apart the trick is pulling it apart in such a way that you can then remember how to put it together again. One thing that I learned as I went along was to place every part that i removed in a single filed line on the floor with the bolts I needed right next to each item. That way when I was piecing the engine back together I knew the sequence of fitting the parts on. I Cant tell you how much this helps when your attempting to put everything back together again.

As you work you should also clean of the dirt, grime and oil from everything everywhere. You will be thanking yourself as you put them all back on. When replacing your timing belt just make sure your engine timing is SPOT ON! this is the most important part

There is a trick used here and its not something that's talked about it books.

Before removing the old timing belt, you mark the gears and the belt with nail polish or paint or white out. So as to show where the teeth on the gears meet on the belt EXACTLY.
Once the belt is removed you place the new and old timing belts side by side or on top of each other, then you proceed to mark out exactly where the teeth should be on the new belt.
With the new belt marked you put it in place getting your markings exactly..

This should line everything up perfectly and take some of the guess work out.

Recently, a friend asked me to help him design a new website for his photography business. and what follows is what I came across as far as designing a photographers website with as little coding as possible.

the components I looked into include and are not exclusive to the list below.

There must have been 30 or so themes and templates that I thought I could possibly use not to mention the different types of gallerys. alot of them that were very complete and detailed in their refinement but just of no use in this situation.

a quick google search and Im sure you can find half a dozen great sites.

So the first thing to do is to begin the build in a test environment.

I recommend APACHE2TRIAD this has been a solid performing, minimal fuss installation of Apache2.2, PHP5, MySQL5 and a whole host of other features rolled into one. the integration of the admin panel with PHPmyadmin is great and perfect for everytask ive thrown at it.

Once thats done I installed Joomla 1.5. I chose joomla because of the online community thats surrounds this open source system. Especially considering Ill be handing this site on to someone else to manage.

CMS : Joomla 1.5.10 Full Package Download

The install of Joomla takes 2 minutes start to end.
First you should quickly go into PHPmyadmin and create a database. Then Copy the Joomla files to your Server ( anywhere you like as long as its in the htdocs and the webserver can see it )
browse to your joomla director with your browser http://localhost/{joomla directory}
This should start you on your joomla install path. Once your done, delete the Installation folder and you will be ready to use and configure joomla.

THEME : Kitephotography Download : Mirror

This theme also not as flashy or as glamorous as some others, was a nice comprimise. All we wanted was a white background to work from and this was a nice launch pad i guess.

This is an alternate design I proposed just in case the original didnt go down so well.

GALLERY : SlideshowPro Download

Downloading this package with give you SSP, SSP director and a few other goodies to make your day. There should also be a sneaky module tucked away inthe folders for EasySSP.

Basically, this is a fully customisable Flash Gallery. With an option to recreate the Slideshow flash file in Adobe Flash with either actionscript 2 or 3. You dont need adobe flash at all. Not for creating the slideshow, nor for customizing it. Maybe if you go a little deeper it might be a good idea to use flash but not for our needs here.

GALLERY : EasySSP Download

Ok so for this you want to go into your Joomla Administrator page and install this module.
Make sure you active it properly. I recommend you read and reread the documentation supplied on the site. Admittedly there are other ways to load your Slideshow onto joomla and you may not want to use Easyssp. Another good way I found was to use the Moseasymedia module which you can download from HERE.

Configure your Param.xml with EASYSSP Builder. This is a great online tool that lets you choose edit and reconfigure all the different settings for your slide show Gallery.
You can set your colours sizes etc and when your finished you can export all those settings in an XML file which you can load onto your site for slideshowpro to use. Just like magic your gallery is that same colour scheme as your site. This is a something that can be done in Adobe Flash when creating your slideshow from scratch.

so hopefully after installing all that you need to install and configure you should be able to see your gallery.

GALLERY : SlideShowPro Director

From here you can install and configure the SlideshowPro Director onto your website.
Director needs a MySQL database to function. Note that there is also an activation key thats needed.

if you want to install ssp director without having an activation key,
just go to "ssp_director/app/controllers/components/pigeon.php" and replace line 100

"return (preg_match('/^(127.0.0.1|localhost)(:d+)?$/i', $this->baseDomain())) ? true : false;",

with

now the activation key is unrequired!

when I installed the gallery I had an issue with URL locations in some of the files.

mod_easyssp.php - loader.swf entry needs to be replace with the name of your slideshow. You May need to double check the path of the file too.
param.xml - check the location of the images.xml file
images.xml - check the location of your images OR if your using Director you will need to enter the link to director and set file type to 'Director'
crossdomain.xml - you will need to enter your url in here

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature

Set it?s value to ?0?;(Zero)

Increase the Speed at Which Firefox loads pages

Type ?about:config? into the address bar and hit Enter.
(Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)
Alter the entries as follows:
Set ?network.http.pipelining? to ?true?
Set ?network.http.proxy.pipelining? to ?true?

With that in mind.. if your updating your music collection with correct names and album information, you might want to add this to your bag of tricks.

ONE Llama - Internet Radio Search tool

There are countless online radio stations scattered across the web, covering topics ranging from sports and talk radio to eclectic folk music, and everything in between. Because of the dizzying amount of choices, it can be difficult to sift through each station to find one that fits your musical personality the best - you might know it’s out there, but you don’t know how to find it.

An Illinois based startup OneLlama, has aggregated many of these stations into a single hub called Radio OneLlama, allowing users to quickly identify the stations that best fit their tastes. The site is currently in private beta, but you can grab one of 500 invites here (enter the invite code “techcrunch”).

The site has a very spartan interface, primarily consisting of a single search bar asking you to enter your favorite artist. After entering the musician of your choice, the site produces a list of stations that have recently played a song by that artist, along with the song that is currently playing. Users can also view charts of the most popular artists across all radio stations (Madonna and The Beatles currently lead) and the most popular songs.

It’s a fun site to play around with and is well designed, but I question if it’s really any more helpful for finding a station I’d like than a standard list of stations sorted by genre. And because the engine is only using a single song to determine if I’d like a station, it tends to get a lot of false positives - it would be much better if I could enter a list of artists I like and find a station that has played all of them. Of course, Pandora already lets me build my own radio station by doing just that.

FIT PC - worlds Smallest PC

CompuLab introduced a tiny fanless PC using 4-6 Watts of power. The Linux-ready "Fit-PC Slim" measures 4.3 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches (110 x 100 x 30mm), but includes a 500MHz AMD Geode LX800, Ethernet, VGA output, WiFi, and a 2.5-inch hard drive option, says CompuLab.

The Fit-PC Slim apparently includes much the same ingredients as CompuLab's earlier Fit-PC, introduced last year. The original Fit-PC used CompuLab's CM-iGLX computer-on-module (COM), which like the new Fit-PC Slim includes a 500MHz AMD Geode LX800 processor plus display, disk, USB, and networking controllers.

While the original Fit-PC measured 4.7 x 4.6 x 1.6 inches (119 x 117 x 41mm), the Fit-PC Slim is even smaller, at 4.3 x 3.9 x 1.2 (109 x 99 x 30mm) inches, says CompuLab. These dimensions make it tinier than the eBox-4300, once claimed to be the world's smallest system capable of running Linux or Windows XP when it was launched last December.

The Fit-PC Slim has an easily accessible hard drive bay

Despite being smaller than the original Fit-PC, the Fit-PC Slim optionally increases memory from 256MB to 512MB. The new version also adds an easily accessible bay for 2.5-inch hard drives (pictured above). The Fit-PC was available with a hard drive as well, but the drive was "deeply buried," by CompuLab's own admission.

An entirely new option on the Fit-PC Slim is a WiFi adapter. Because the adapter supports access point mode, it not only provides wireless networking, but can also let the Fit-PC Slim be used as a wireless router, the company says.

The Fit-PC was described as using 3-5 Watts of power, whereas the Fit-PC Slim is said to use 4-6 Watts. CompuLab does not say if the WiFi circuitry is responsible for the growth in power budget, but if so, the device can always be ordered without it.

Other Fit-PC Slim capabilities include a single Ethernet port with RJ45 connector, three USB ports, VGA output, and audio I/O. The computer also has a serial port, with a non-standard cable that requires an adapter cable.

An external power supply accepts AC line voltages from 110VAC to 220VAC, providing the Fit-PC Slim with a nominal 12VDC input. CompuLab adds that the device tolerates power that varies from 9VDC to 15VDC, making it suitable for connection to car batteries or solar panels.

Features and specifications listed by CompuLab for the Fit-PC Slim include:

According to CompuLab, the Fit-PC Slim is available in a bare-bones 256MB configuration without WiFi for $220, or a 512MB version with WiFi but no hard drive for $245. Versions that include 60MB hard drives, 512MB of RAM, and either Linux or Windows XP Home, cost $295 and $335, respectively.

The second-gen TouchSmart IQ500s just arrived in July, but HP isn't sitting still -- say hello to the new TouchSmart IQ800 series. Both the new TouchSmart IQ804 and IQ816 feature a 25.5-inch 1920 x 1200 touchscreen with various TouchSmart-specific apps, a TV tuner with remote, integrated webcam, Bluetooth, HP Pocket Media drive bay, and an ambient light to illuminate your keyboard, but the IQ804 confusingly has a higher-clocked 2.16GHz T5850 Core 2 Duo on a 667MHz bus with 2MB of cache while the IQ816 has a 2.10GHz T8100 Core 2 Duo on a 800MHz bus with a 3MB cache -- we'd bet the IQ816 benchmarks faster, regardless of the slightly slower chip. On top of that, the IQ816 also bundles in a Blu-ray drive / dual-layer burner and upgrades the IQ804's GeForce 9300M GS graphics to a GeForce 9600M GS chip. Expect to see the IQ804 on September 21 for $1,899, while you'll have to fork over $2,099 for the IQ816 when it hits on October 12
